Long Orientation Day #1

Today started with me becoming completely disoriented as I couldn't find my phone alarm which was going off with its' oh so lovely melody. This morning, we were picked up at 7:15. Tomorrow is 6:15. And that will be normal. Pity me people. Also, pity my housemates and friends as deal with me waking up at 5:45 consistently.

Downtown Rochester is beautiful. There are a bunch of cute restaurants and shops. Mayo Clinic itself is very impressive. Our first few sessions today were going over the basics of the program. One thing that is really cool is that I get some paid educational and observation experiences. There are classes that I can sign up for and floors where I can observe for a while that is included in our schedule. I'll let you know if I find anything interesting.

After around 2 1/2 hours of this, we split up to meet our NES (Nurse education specialist). They gave us our schedules and some more specific information about our floors. There are a bunch of evaluations throughout the summer that they'll be helping us with as well.

Next came the highlight of my day. Lunch! Can you guess what was served? Salad! Granted it was delicious, but that was it. I must have missed the healthy memo. Whoops. However, I was seated at Table 1 and this gave me a great advantage. I ended up sitting next to THE chair of nursing for all of Mayo Clinic! This lady was in charge of 13,000 nurses and there we were chatting away at lunch. First day and I'm making small talk with a world renowned nurse person. Kind of a big deal. She used low-fat dressing and refused dessert. I need to work on my whole nutrition mindset.

After lunch, we had another session and got all of our paperwork stuff figured out. It's amazing how 8 hours of sitting in a chair can wear you out. Tomorrow we have another orientation day with a tour of Mayo. Wednesday we are on our units!

See y'all later! (some of my roommates are from the south and use y'all a lot. I like it :) )

Additional note: Rochester has an amazing bike trail system. You can get anywhere easily and safely and excersicingly.
